A fantastic entry of top competitors will be at Mallory Park this Sunday for the final major UK based motorcycle race of the year.
Team Rizla Suzuki will field two superbikes after a fantastic final BSB round last weekend Cal Crutchlow is fired up and looking to repeat his podium place and take the victory in the “Race of the Year”. Crutchlow from nearby Coventry will be on top form as he returns to Mallory, where he did much of his club racing a few years ago.
His team mate for the weekend will bring a lot of interest. The second Rizla Suzuki will be ridden by British 125cc championship competitor Jenny Tinmouth, making her the first women to ride a full blown factory Superbike in this country on Chris Walkers 210bhp factory GSX-R1000 rocket ship.
Jenny, 29, from Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, is a regular 125cc British Championship contender and started racing eight years ago after being bitten by the bike bug following her dad to race meetings. Working as a bike mechanic for her own business, Two Wheel Workshop, she is not your typical biker in any sense.
Yamaha will field three machines two superbikes and one Supersport 600. The first superbike sponsored by Virgin Media Optoma Loans Yamaha will be piloted by Australian Billy McConnell who resides just down the road from Mallory at Stoke Golding.
John McGuinness (34) currently the fastest man around the Isle of Man TT course at over 130mph. John from Morecombe in Lancashire is one of Britain’s great all-rounders, not only an expert on the open roads like the Isle of Man, NW200 & Macau he is very much a force on the short circuits. John has this year ridden in the British Superstock championship.
The final Yamaha will be in the hands of Virgin R6 Cup contender David Paton, The Scottish youngster who finished third in this year Virgin Yamaha R6 Cup gets a chance to ride a 600 Supersport spec bike in the main race.
MSS Discovery Kawasaki will enter Michael Rutter and one of Britain’s young prospects James Webb.
Michael will ride the machine that he has used throughout 2007 and is very pleased to be to be coming back to his local circuit and looks to take a top spot in the prestigious Race of the Year in readiness for his attack at the Macau Grand Prix in November.
34 Year old, Rutter a master of the 1.39 mile Mallory circuit has been racing since 1989 when his first race was at Snetterton. He went on to climb to the top of the sport in Britain and took his first British Superbike win in 1994 at Donington Park. As well as specialising on the short circuits, Michael is one of the best British talents on the open road races having taken many wins at the Isle of Man, the NW200 & he has won the Macau GP on several occasions.
Kentish youngster James Webb who will have his first real run on a top team Superbike.
James started his race career on the dirt back in 1997 with a run in the East Kent Schoolboy Junior Motor-Cross championship where he finished 4th in the Auto-Class Championship.
From 2002 he competed in the MRO Super team series later that year he moved to GP 125 class at club level, which he then raced the following year, before moving to the British Championship in 2004.
This year James has contested and been the front runner in many of the races in the Virgin Media Cup on a Yamaha 600.
Hawk Colchester Kawasaki enters two superbikes for their regular British Superbike Championship pairing of James Haydon & Scott Smart.
The team have had a mixed fortune this year with James Haydon joining part way through this year’s championship.
James is a rider that is capable of winning the event if everything goes his way; the very talented rider has had a great career which started many years ago in the MCN Superteen series.
Smart, the son of seventies star Paul was another of a whole breed of riders that started in the Superteen series. The Kentish rider has had a good season this year with points finishes in nineteen of the BSB rounds in 2007 albeit he would have liked to have finished higher in the placings, Seventh being his best placing.
Buildbase Ducati Coventry, The locally based British Championship team will field a bike for British Superstock racer John Laverty.
The team will also display the Loris Capirossi Grand Prix winning Ducati, which, subject to the weather conditions, will also take part in some demonstration laps.
Astro Van Centre has entered a further two British Superstock Kawasakis for Dean Johnson & Kenny Gilbertson.
UK1 Racing has also entered another of the British young talent that is coming through the ranks. They will field regular British 125cc front runner Kev Couglan, another of the riders looking to move up into a larger class for 2008.
In addition to this great line up we have Mallory regulars Pete “Pesky”Ward (Hinckley) on his Yamaha, Aaron Brown (Nuneaton) aboard his immaculate 1095cc Ducati. The Co-ordit Team of Pete Bradshaw (Leicester) & Dave Wardle. Plus the Marfab Kawasaki of Mark Littler Mallory race winner Johnny Bennett will also be looking for a part of the action on another Kawasaki.
The “Race of the Year” event we will host the final round of the British Sidecar Championship which takes place over two races & including the “The Steve Webster Trophy”.
The newly crowned World & British Sidecar Champions Tim Reeves & Pat Farrence will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run in the eight previous races.
Their opposition will come from team mates Sean & Mark Hegarty. Sweden’s Billy Galros will return to Mallory for the second time this month so that he can contest in this superb end of season event.
Other top sidecar teams will be out to secure their final place in the British Title include Gary & Dan Knight, Brian Peddar & Rod Steadman, Danny Morrisey & Phil Biggs plus many more of Britain’s top sidecar race crews.
The remainder of the event will be no less exciting, The support will be the final rounds of the East Midlands Racing Association championships over a series of double point races to conclude no fewer than eleven titles.
