Successful World Motocross debut for Mallory Park
A huge crowd and spectacular racing was exactly what Mallory Park had hoped for during its inaugural World Motocross Grand Prix, and that is exactly what it got on Sunday 1st June.
41,000 Motocross fans turned out to cheer on the British riders and see their racing heroes in action as they took to the specially built track for the sixth round of the World Motocross Grand Prix. Mallory Park put a lot of effort into ensuring that the circuit was up to World class standards, and the hard work paid off with high speed, air borne antics entertaining the spectators.
The whole event had a carnival feel to it due to Mallory Park opening its gates on Friday evening for access to the fun fair, Saturday evening saw several bands take to the stage which further enhanced the atmosphere in preparation for the racing on Sunday.
British MX 2 rider, Tommy Searle, riding for the Red Bull KTM team gave fans plenty to cheers about, stepping on the podium twice over the weekend in third and second places. Dave Thorpe, three times World Motocross Champion and defending World Veterans Champion, also had the crowd behind him as he picked up two second place finishes.
Commenting on the new circuit Searle said: “I enjoy racing in front of my home fans as they make the day. The track is good, lots of soil and different lines - they did a good job.”
Roger Harvey, Honda’s Off-Road Coordinator, agreed with Searle saying: “It is a spectacular circuit and the riders have to pay attention as it is difficult, it would be easy to fold the front end and crash. Road race circuits like Mallory is where I see Motocross expanding to, a purpose built track at a suitable venue. The riders think it is a pretty good circuit and I’ve heard very positive comments from everyone, so that is great news.”
John Ward, General Manager of Mallory Park said: “The World Motocross round has been very successful on all fronts. The fans got a spectacular show from the riders, and we had a British rider on the podium. The rain stayed away for us so overall I’m really pleased with how everything went. ”
