Rallycross finale at Mallory Park

Mirror OnlineThe final round of the Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship is set to slide its way into Mallory Park on Sunday 18th October.

The hotly fought eight round series has produced some mad sideways action so far this year and at the mid point the Championship couldn’t get much closer.

Steve Hill won the Superfinal in his Mitsubishi Lancer E9, his first win of the year, which has secured him the title lead by a very slim three points.

Pat Dorna is now in second place in his Ford Fiesta ST ERC with Lawrence Gibson in third place a little further away as he is eight points off second.

By the time the Championship comes to Mallory Park anyone could be in the hot seat.

The Rallycross field is made up of three different classes Supercar, Supermodified, and Stockhatch. The Supercars are 550BHP monsters with four-wheel drive and a turbo charger. These machines are capable of accelerating like an F1 car.

The Supermodified vehicles are also fast and furious with 400bhp per tonne being the norm for these front wheel drive cars. And finally the Stockhatch class which is there to produce skilled drivers, they are regular production cars with an engine limit of 1600cc 8V and 1600cc 16v. They have tight regulations regarding tuning as the aim is to find skilled drivers rather than skilled engine tuners.

Rallycross is growing in popularity and in stature, which is why the organizers are keen to bring it to a well known and established venue like Mallory Park. With a superb infrastructure which has successfully hosted the World Motocross Championship twice as well as the British Superbike Championship for a number of years.

The Rallycross track will take approximately three months to build and it will use the services of former Rallycross driver Cecil Haffey. Haffey’s knowledge will ensure that the tarmac and gravel will merge well and create an exciting circuit for some extreme racing.
